Lecturer bioWendy Gunn has recently been appointed as the Jiangsu University Jinshan Distinguished Professor, Art School of Jiangsu University, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, P.R. China. As a researcher, she has cross-disciplinary expertise in design, architecture and anthropology and significant experience of conducting collaborative research as part of multidisciplinary design teams involving both private and public sectors. Central to her research is a close connection between theory and practice, research and teaching. Gunn is an Adjunct Professor (Research) in Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, Monash University, Australia. The Adjunct Professorship is connected to the Emerging Technologies Research Lab.

SpecialismDesign Anthropology

Lecture IntroDesign Anthropology is concerned with learning. That is a design anthropology enables peoples to be actively involved as part of their own learning practice of learning and research. Thus the main goal of Design Anthropology is educational. Importantly, this emerging field is inherently interdisciplinary and requires rigor, engaging within worlds through careful very precise attention to practices of inquiry. In is essential however these practices while being concerned with politicality and criticality, continue to involve sensorial modes of making and engagement, informed by different ways of caring for others. Within such iterative world making research is through making together– part of the understanding comes through making together.Transition Designconsiders temporal dimensions of designing and is an attempt to engage with the extent of social challenges by advancing the practices of social and sustainable designing through practice based design research (Tonkinwise 2015). One ofParticipatory Innovation central aims is to involve a broader grouping of peoples within innovation processes and practices who otherwise would be excluded. Integral to my research at Jiangsu University is exploring how these emerging fields of inquiry, with different methodological positioning and methods, can be brought together in Chinese led collaborative international research projects giving focus to the transition from ‘Made in China to Created in China’.
