4th Medical Synapse | IMSA‘s Prestegious Annual Event

One interesting difference between a cold and flu is that a cold is characterized by symptoms which are exclusive to the head and neck ,for example a running nose and sore throat, while flu includes symptoms of the whole body e.g. muscle weakness, headache etc. This was just one of the interesting information we received at the 4th edition of Medical Synapse which commenced at 6pm on 2nd June 2018.

In her opening speech Ms Cai, who was the guest of honour said it’s a breakthrough that Chinese students and OECians are now participating in the same events and she hopes that in the future more Chinese will participate in events organized by OECians.

The Judging panel consisted of Prof. Xu Xiao, Prof. Zhang Xu, Prof. Ju Xiaoli, Ms Zhou Zhen Grong, Post Docs: Dr Dinesh Kumar Kesavan and Dr Hafiz Muhammad Ahsan.

The seminar comprised of 8 groups; 6 OECian groups and 2 Chinese groups. The first 4 groups presented in the first session and the remaining 4 presented in the second session.

The first group presented on Dementia, its types and treatment and also stated that Dementia cannot be detected earlier in life. The second group which composed of Chinese students spoke on “The effect of light on sleep” and at the end of their speech told the audience to make a choice between their mobile phones and sleep because the light produced by phones have a great effect on sleep.

Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest scientists of our age, had a disease which deprived him the ability to walk, breath, or even talk. Brain implant machines allowed him to do most of the things he no longer could do. Group 3 with the title ‘Communication for ALS patients using Brain implant’ explained to the audience how the disease affects individuals and how the brain implant works.

The 4th group presented on “Bipolar disorders” with enthusiasm and at the end of their presentation told the audience that a small break dance can help people who feel depressed. The 5th group consisted of the previous IMSA executives and took on the topic “Flu Vaccine” and enlightened the audience that scientists are working on a universal flu vaccine.

“A cup of green tea a day keeps obesity away?” This was the topic presented by the second Chinese group at the event. The group also enlightened the audience that although tea is known to help lose weight the reason is not yet clear.

As we all know that science has no definite answers and it evolves every day, group 7 challenged the conventional wisdom which for so long said that obesity leads to type 2 diabetes.

The final group talked about “Alien Hand Syndrome” in depth.

The closing remarks were given by Ms Ellen Appiagyei from IMSA who thanked the judges, participants, audience and executives for making the event successful.

Overall it was an informative event not just for medical students but for non-medical students too. The medical synapse did not disappoint us and it got us excited for the next edition.
