The Grand Medforum | Preparing for Medicine of Tomorrow

A medical seminar was held on Sunday the 30th of September and it was nothing short of charge and excitement for the attendees. The seminar, a venture by the MedForum organization dubbed “Preparing for the Medicine of Tomorrow”, had the future doctors from this University informed about the importance of their field and what lies ahead of them as future medical experts. The event was sponsored by JSU School of Medicine and Overseas Education College. Chief guests for the event where Prof. Zhang and Prof. Xu from School of Medicine. The International Medical Students Association (IMSA) invited the Medforum team to organize the training session on JSU campus. Over 300 Chinese and Foreign students showed up at the event.

The speakers at the event were Dr. Nicholas Comninellis, an associate professor of Community and Family Medicine at University of Missouri-Kansas City, School of Medicine, and also the founder and president of INMED (USA), Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Francisca Nuer-Allonuvor, a specialist obstetrician gynecologists and the CEO and president of MedForum China Dr. Paul Adu-Domfeh.

The first to speak was Dr. Nicholas who stressed on the importance of doctors working in low income communities where people are fighting for their lives from poverty related diseases such as Malaria, TB and malnutrition. He gave accounts of his own experiences as a doctor who worked at these low income communities in different countries such as India, Ghana and Angola. His presentation was fun and visual as he engaged the crowd with scenes from the famous movie “Lord of the Rings” to stress the point he was trying to make across. He later addressed some of the challenges young doctors may go through by working in such areas and closed his segment.

Dr. Gloria came on stage afterwards and her presentation was underlining the care that needs to be given to diabetic pregnant women. She opened her segment with a powerful phrase; “Healthy mother, healthy baby, healthy nation and healthy world”. She pointed out causes of diabetes and the importance of checking for it in pregnant women, she thoroughly expounded on the procedures to be taken in dealing with such women and the consequences of diabetes in general.

Lastly Dr. Paul took his turn and talked about malnutrition. He opened his segment with a case study of a 3 year old boy suffering from diarrhea. He interestingly involved the audience by asking them how they would diagnose him and handle the situation. He later delved in depth about malnutrition related disease and pointed out their different types and what causes them. He stressed that some malnutrition diseases don’t come from the lack of food alone but also a deficiency in micro nutrients such as vitamins, iron and iodine. He stressed on the signs and symptoms and also the treatment. At the end of his presentation, he briefly talked about the origin of MedForum China and why it begun. According to the doctor, MedForum began in 2015 at a university in Shenyang and its reason was to connect all medical students in China and expose them to a medical world outside the classroom. He also talked about Lecturio, an app designed to help medical students in self-learning and study and Clinical Rotation, USA, an organization that gives medical students and graduates an opportunity to experience the medical world of the USA.

The program came to a close with a practical session where students got to experience up close clinical situations such as those from the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Basic Surgery technology and many more.
