On Friday August 6th, at exactly 10am, the much-anticipated seminar organized by the Association of International Engineering Students of Jiangsu University Overseas Education College was held online with 3 amazing speakers and 20 attendees in total.

OECians had the opportunity to be enlightened by an experienced Chemical Engineering professor and Science communicator, Dr. Cinthia Reyes who gave an educative and interesting lecture on“Technovation Girls”, solely an international competition for girls from very young age to 18 years old, in which they aim to inspire the girls to be leaders and problem solvers in their lives and their communities through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math).

Participants saw how the world is being built from a man’s perspective, from medical tests of secondary effects of new drugs considering mainly men, to the car crash dummy designed with men features; and realized the importance of creating an equally gender balanced world.

The second speaker, Dr. Gerardo Hirata coordinator of the Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering from CICESE (California Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education) gave us a life history about himself of surviving an earthquake of 7.22 magnitude which impelled him to start a research on earthquake resistant structures. He also educated us on the importance and different types of seismic protection systems and his work in Active systems. We learned some ways of control with real simulations.

To draw the curtains, Engineer Camilo Reyes a master degree student in Satellite Technology at Wurzburg University in Germany and SGAC Open cosmos academy ambassador lectured us on “Mission Concept and types of satellites”. We got to know recent projects that are being carried out in the world to improve the Communication Systems through the use of satellites.

He concluded, saying “all OECians have the possibility of being part of a space program that sends satellite into orbit, this through the convocation of the United Nations, for which we must propose a specific need and develop a flight design.

Conclusively, it was a very fruitful seminar with a worldwide vision in different fields, from the importance of including and encouraging women in STEM, to the considerations needed to building our cities and the future of space.
