The International Medical Students Association of Jiangsu University (IMSA) organized its annual Problem-Based Learning (PBL) workshop at the School of Medicine from February 8th to 10th. A three-day comprehensive curriculum comprising of clinical situations to foster critical thinking, problem solving aptitude and integration of biological, behavioral, and social medicine knowledge. Almost 90 students participated, divided into groups containing 7 to 9 students and a faculty facilitator. Each group elected its chair and scribed to smoothen out the discussion and record the progress. Three different cases (Surgical COVID Case, Chain-smoker to Backpacker and Drunk Drive ) were distributed among the groups.

The information was disclosed progressively over three days for each case. The students identified learning issues and discussed the given case information among themselves. Students created a concept map synthesizing the knowledge garnered over the course of their discussions to demonstrate their understanding of how the elements of the case integrate with and relate to one another. After extensive research on their respective case studies, they concluded their discussion by diagnosing a possible disease and also suggested its management option.

On 10th Feb, the closing ceremony and a welcoming event for all returning medicos were held in School of Medicine conference hall. The ceremony concluded with an interactive, fun science trivia quiz session led by Tanuj Yadav. Students enthusiastically took part in it and were rewarded for their correct answers. Later, Prof. Ma Rui introduced students to the anatomy lab while briefing them about various clinical specimens. The students were glad to be part of the event and appreciated the process as possessing strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential to providing exceptional, patient–centered care, placing problem-based learning at the heart of our curriculum.
